About Santorini The Volcano Magic Santorini belongs to the Cyclades group of Aegean islands in the Greek Archipelago. The ancient name of the island and the official one is Thera (Θήρα). Thera is the largest of the set of volcanic islands, that emerged / submerged around the volcanic crater, and most people call it today Santorini, a Greek parallax of the Italian-Enetic word 'Santa Irene', due to a small church with that name located on another of these islands, Therassia. Thera is located east of the volcano and Therassia west of it, and along with Aspronisi they form a circle. The spectacular landscapes, picturesque villages and typical cycladic architecture render Santorini a unique experience. Apart from its physical beauty, the island is renowned for its ancient civilisation akin Minoan on close-by Crete. Santorini offers 3500 years of history visible through its archaelogical sites, excavation sites, monuments, museums, old churches and monasteries. Santorini, is a 35 minute flight from Athens (4 flights per day) and there are daily connections by boat from Piraeus as well as direct chartered flights from almost all European capitals to the island.
