The Department of Biology of the University of Patras was established in 1967 and was the first Biology Department in the Greek University System.

All faculty members are active researchers, publishing in international scientific journals. Representative areas of their research include: Genetics, Population and Evolutionary Genetics, Cytogenetics and Molecular Genetics, Muta-genesis, Cell Biofogy, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Developmental Biology, Biotechnology, Animal Physiology, Neuro-sciences, Environmental Physiology, Zoology, Animal Taxonomy, Marine Biology, Aquaculture Entomology, Phylogenesis, Plant Physiology and Ecophysiology, Plant Anatomy, Morphology and Phylogeny, Plant Taxonomy, Plant Geography Ecology and Biodiversity.

Parallel to the Programme of Undergraduate Studies, an official Programme of Post-graduate Studies has been established in the Department since 1993.

The Department is housed in a four-story building covering an area of 25,000 m2. It provides research and teaching laboratory facilities, classrooms and office space.
