Zoi Lygerou, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Patras and was elected as a Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) by 1600 of the members. The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) is an organization of Life Scientists. Since 1964, scientists have been elected annually as members of the EMBO based on their excellence in Research. At present, there are more than 1600 EMBO Members, 66 of which have received the Nobel Prize. EMBO is also a founding member of the Initiative for Science in Europe. During the 50 years of EMBO existence, 11 Greek scientists have been elected as EMBO members. Professor Lygerou, graduated from the Department of Biology at the University of Athens and received her PhD from the University of Heidelberg, and was the first Greek female scientist to have received this distinction.
