The Department of Food Science & Technology (FST) is one of the younger departments in the University of Patras and its establishment and the incoming of its first students was true in the academic year 2019-2020. It is one of the six departments of the School of Agricultural Sciences, which situated in the city of Mesologi.
The Department of FST is placed in the hospitable city of Agrinio in the western Greece. There are two modern buildings that host the facilities of this department along with two other University departments, in a beautiful academic environment.
The curriculum of the FST was build considering all the international demands of a modern academic education utilizing innovating practices in the lectures and the laboratory exercises. It must be pointed that the 5years curriculum leads to the award of an Integrated Master, Level 7 degree to its graduates, providing them with a distinct advantage in comparison to a 4years curriculum of other departments.
The main purpose of the Department of FST is to provide its students an integrated knowledge through the interaction of several scientific fields, such as chemistry, microbiology, food production and management, as well as entrepreneurship, in the frame of an interconnection between the University, the productive process and the corporate world. The aim is the production of young scientists who are going to contribute to the development of qualitative food products, of high nutritional value being safe and attractive to the public, and who can bε able to work in a competitive environment in Greece and abroad.
The graduates of the Department of FST are awarded the degree of agriculturalist and are expected to be able to practice their profession in the frame of their specialization according to the rules of the Geotechnical Chamber of Greece (ΓΕΩΤΕΕ) as referred in the presidential order Π.Δ. 344/2000. After the completion of their studies, the graduates of the FST Department can be in position to be part of the staff in food industries, in the production sector, in private or public research laboratories, in quality control laboratories performing microbiological analyses, in supply and management enterprises, as well as in the industrial sector of quality control and safety of products. Moreover, the graduates can be members of various public services such as the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, institutes of agricultural research, state organizations (e.g. Milk Organization, EOMMEX, Centre of Planning and Economic Research, Ηellenic Foreign Trade Bοard, Local Government, etc), while they can also work as staff, advisors and researchers in international organizations (e.g. UN, OECD, EU, UNESCO, FAO, WHO) and international research and development offices.
