Τhe Department of Physiotherapy of the School of Health Rehabilitation Sciences of the University of Patras is a transformation of the Physiotherapy Department of the former TEI of Western Greece according to the law 4610 / 07-05-2019. Taking into account the dynamics of the teaching staff of the Department, its operation in a university academic environment will contribute to the improvement of its academic and research activities. As a self-contained Department, it will be able to organize all courses and coexistence in the same ecosystem with other Departments and scientists of the University will lead to growth, extroversion and multidisciplinary collaborations.

The mission of the Department is to promote, develop and disseminate knowledge in physiotherapy science with appropriate theoretical teaching, broader laboratory and clinical practice and applied research to provide students and graduates with the necessary skills to ensure proper education for their scientific and professional careers and development as Physiotherapists.
In the framework of his mission the Physiotherapy Department:

  • Monitor international developments in the scientific, educational and professional field
  • Develops partnerships with Higher Education Institutions in the country and abroad
  • Carries out applied research in the field of Physiotherapy
  • Cooperates with production units, labor and other bodies, relevant to the subject
  • Uses modern technologies in education
  • Develops students with skills and competences that will make them competent and competitive at national and international level
  • Monitor any developments and changes (educational, economic and social) of the subject in the national and international environment
  • It is constantly on hand to accept, analyze and incorporate new ideas with the aim of always ensuring and improving the quality of studies at the Department.
     

The Vision of the Department includes five interdependent aspects:
1. To provide a high level of education in all fields of Physiotherapy, which follows the modern developments and trends of science internationally
2. The provision and implementation of a high level of laboratory and clinical research in the scientific areas of the Department
3. To provide a high level of service centered on students
4. The provision of a second (postgraduate level) and a third (doctoral level) course in Physiotherapy
5. The interconnection and cooperation of the Department with the local community

Strategic Objectives of the Department
The Strategic Objectives of the Department are in line with Mission and Vision and are developed in three axes: Education, Research and Interconnection with Society-Extraversion. The targets are listed in bold terms:

  • Certification of undergraduate curriculum and continuous quality assurance of all departments of the Department
  • Improving the ratio of teachers to students to improve the quality of the education provided
  • Strengthening the supportive human resources of the Department in technical and specialist teaching staff
  • Immediate operation of the second and third courses of the Department, aiming, on the one hand, at enhancing the educational process, and on the other hand the production of high level research
  • Accomplishment of national and international research programs
  • Development of lifelong learning programs
  • Promotion of the outreach of the Department through cooperation with educational institutions in Greece and abroad
  • Strengthening of interconnection activities with the socio-economic environment, through cooperation with productive institutions and the possibility of professional rehabilitation of graduates
  • Pronunciation of physiotherapy services in special populations through collaborations with health institutions and research programs
  • Improvement of the existing building infrastructure and upgrading of the laboratory and research equipment as well as the library of the Department

Expected Learning Outcomes of the Department
Upon completion of the MAP courses, graduates will be able to:

  • Have the basic background of health and rehabilitation sciences
  • familiarize themselves with the approach of any patient according to current bioethical-ethical criteria, as well as the development of the physiotherapist-patient relationship
  • evaluate a wide range of diseases and injuries by using modern scientific evidence and developing their critical thinking to be able to choose the most appropriate therapies and methods of Physiotherapy
  • conduct a properly structured physical examination based on the history of the disease and the most recent scientific data, selecting reliable and valid means of assessment, and based on clinical reasoning to design a comprehensive intervention program to treat the symptoms and functional rehabilitation of the patient
  • Recognize and understand the effect of predisposing and aggravating factors on various diseases
  • Apply comprehensive physiotherapy programs for injuries and conditions that are safe, appropriate and specialized for each clinical case
  • are aware of the operation of the health units where patients with musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiopulmonary diseases, etc. diseases and injuries, and the role of each health professional in the interdisciplinary rehabilitation team
  • evaluate research and modern bibliographic data regarding the rehabilitation of patients in order to adapt them to the design of physiotherapeutic intervention and research

Description of the Graduate of the Department and Professional Qualifications of the Physiotherapist
The graduates of the Physiotherapy Department have the professional title "Physiotherapists" or "Physiotherapists" and upon completing their studies they acquire the necessary scientific and technological knowledge, skills and skills so that they can independently or in collaboration with doctors after a relevant medical diagnosis, for the prevention, improvement and rehabilitation of pathological conditions of related and acquired as well as traumatic lesions in the backrest, muscular, nervous, respiratory and cardiovascular system, n physiotherapy in patient evaluation, select, organize and carry securely Physiotherapy acts, which in each case are indicated (Official Gazette 222 / 09.17.2003).
In particular, the graduate of the Department is able to perform and perform the physiotherapeutic activities after a written diagnosis of the physician and his / her instructions and more specifically to:

  • Rehabilitates the patient using the appropriate, more efficient and safest specific means, methods and techniques, such as kinesiotherapy, special mobilization techniques, increase and decrease of temperature, electrical irritation, biofeedback, pain inhibition, ergonomic training of the patient and improvement of muscular functional capacity
  • Evaluates the progress or stagnation of the patient's condition and modifies his / her rehabilitation program,
  • Performs research programs that promote the science of Physiotherapy,
  • Designs and implements dysfunctional prevention and repair programs that physiotherapy is chosen to address, in individuals, groups and communities, schools and business premises,
  • Apply the rules of ethics of the subject,
  • Educates and supports the patient and his / her family for the purpose of its operational independence.

Graduate Physiotherapists have the professional right to work as:

  • Executives of the Public and the wider Public Sector as defined by the provisions in force each time,
  • Executives of the private sector, with an employment relationship or other form of employment relationship,
  • Freelance professionals in a private Physiotherapy Laboratory or at home patient visits,
  • They may establish private Physiotherapy workshops in accordance with the provisions of the current legislation

The professional rights of graduates of the Physiotherapy Department have been established under Presidential Decree 90/95 (Government Gazette 53 / 8-3-95) and follow the relevant legislation. Additionally, the official professional body and body for claiming and securing the professional rights of the sector, the Panhellenic Association of Physiotherapists, was upgraded to the Law on the Law of the Republic of Cyprus by Law 3599/2007.
