The official reception of the new Corresponding Member, Professor Dimitrios Beskos, was held on Tuesday March 2nd 2010, at 19:00, at the Academy of Athens.

The President of the Academy of Athens, Professor Constantinos Svolopoulos, addressed Professor Dimitrios Beskos while the Academician Antonios Kounadis presented his scientific work. Afterwards, Professor Dimitrios Beskos gave a speech entitled "Modern Computational Methods in Structural Mechanics".

Mrs Margiolaki is the first Greek woman in science that has been ever awarded with an International UNESCO-L’Oréal Fellowship.

Her research project is to determine the structure of viral proteins capable of fighting emerging viruses in Southeast Europe that cause severe viral haemorrhagic fevers.

The three institutes involved in this project are:

  • The Department of Biology, University of Patras, Patras, Greece
  • The Laboratoire Architectureet Fonction des Macromolécules Biologiques of the CNRS, Marseille, France
  • The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, Grenoble, France.

  • The “Georgios Fotinos” Prize of the Academy of Athens for the year 2009 was awarded to T. Bountis, Professor of the Department of Mathematics, for his research work related to the stability of motion in complex dynamic systems. The complete citation of the awarded paper is: T.  Bountis. “Stability of Motion:  From Lyapunov to the Dynamics of N–Degree of Freedom Hamiltonian Systems”. Journal of Nonlinear Phenomena in Complex Systems, Vol.9, No.3, pp.209-239, 2006.
  • The “Dimitrios Labadarios” Prize of the Academy of Athens for the year 2009 was awarded to S. Stiros, Associate Professor, P. Psimoulis, Ph.D. and D. Karambalis, Professor for their research paper entitled “Potential of Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure frequencies of oscillations of engineering structures”. The complete citation of the awarded paper is P. Psimoulis, S. Pytharoulia, D. Karambalis and S. Stiros. “Potential of Global Positioning System (GPS) to measure frequencies of oscillations of engineering structures”, Journal of Sound and Vibration, Vol. 318, Issue 3, pp.606-623, 2008.
  • The two “Labadarios” Prize  of the Academy of Athens for the year 2009 were awarded to Mr Pavlos Asteriou and Mr Labros Koutas, alumni of the Department of Civil Engineering. These awards are granted to the best students in the course of Geodesy in Engineering Schools of Greek Universities for the academic year 2007-2008.
