Professor Venetsana E. Kyriazopoulou elected new Rector

Professor Kyriazopoulou, Rector of the University of Patras for the period 2014-2018

Elections were held on the 18 June 2014 for the new Rector of the University of Patras, for the period 2014-2018. This is the first time that a Rector was elected following a procedure established under the new Higher Education Law that came into in effect in 2011. The President of the University Council invited International Candidates who expressed an interest in being elected Rector of the University of Patras for a 4 year period (2014 - 2018) Candidates for the position of Rector had to be full Professors from a Greek or Foreign University, with Greek citizenship, of high professional standing and with significant administrative experience.

The four distinguished candidates that expressed their interest were Professors of the University of Patras. The candidates were: Professor Vassilis Anastassopoulos from the Physics Department, Professor Venetsiana Kyriazopoulou from the Medicine Department, Professor Konstantinos Ravanis from the Early Childhood Education Department, and Professor Theodore Christopoulos from the Chemistry Department.

The University Council then selected the two candidates that passed into the second phase of the election where the entire Academic Faculty had to cast their vote. Professor Kyriazopoulou and Professor Ravanis were selected and went through to the second phase.

In the election that was held on June 18th, the Academic Faculty (over 84% voted) cast their electronic vote. The results were very close. Professor Kyriazopoulou received a total of 268 votes (50.3%) and Professor Konstantinos Ravanis a total of 265 votes (49.7%), whilst 92 voters chose to cast blank votes. Professor Kyriazopoulou, was elected as the new Rector of the University of Patras, who then took office on the 1st September 2014, being the first woman ever in the history of the University of Patras to serve as Rector.

Professor Kyriazopoulou is a Medical Doctor and a Professor of Endocrinology and held the position of Dean of the School of Health Sciences for the period 2010-2014. Professor Venetsana Kyriazopoulou studied Medicine at the Medical School at the University of Parma, Italy and the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Her Residency and Fellowship were completed at the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the Medical School, University of Patras. Her special research interests are related to Hypothalamic –Pituitary –Adrenal Axis Disease (especially Addisons disease), Diabetes, Metabolic Disease and Thyroid disease.

After the election, in her thank you message, Professor Kyriazopoulou expressed her determination to work hard towards making the University of Patras, a Centre of Excellence, acknowledging though that the current problems are explosive, therefore active participation of all members of the University would be needed in order to face the challenges that lie ahead.
