Nikos Karamanos is Professor of Biochemistry and Organic Biochemical Analysis. He received his BA with Honors in Chemistry in 1984, PhD (Biochemistry, 1988) from the Department of Chemistry, University of Patras, and was trained at Sweden in pre- and post-doctoral level (Karolinska Institute, School of Medicine).

On the administrative level, he served for two-year periods Head of the Department of Chemistry, for two years Director Division and a member of the Senate of the University of Patras for five years. He is a member of the Committee on Erasmus and Quality Assurance Unit of the University of Patras (MO.DI.P), an elected member of the board of the Hellenic Society of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (HSBMB) since 2004, coordinator of the Thematic Network of Hellenic Matrix Biology, representative in Matrix Biology Europe (MBE, former FECTS) and served as an expert to the European FP7 program in "Health".

In scientific and organizational level, is an active member of the editorial boards/ academic editor in 10 scientific international journals (The Journal of Biological Chemistry, FEBS Journal, PLoS ONE, Matrix Biology, Current Medicinal Chemistry, Biomedical Chromatography etc) and reviewer in >35 international scientific journals. Is editor of the international book edition: Extracellular Matrix: Pathobiology & Signaling, Walter de Gruyter (2012), Berlin / Boston, and guest editor/coordinator then call in 10 special issues in international journals.

He has supervised 15 Ph.D. theses and 27 M.Sc. He coordinated Coordinator and involved as a researcher in several International and National research programs. Participates, outside the country, as a judge of concurrent programs in prestigious international organizations (France, England, Italy, European Union, USA etc), as evaluator for PhD thesis in Europe (Norway, Denmark, Italy etc), as a member of committee evaluation for professors and researchers abroad (USA, Sweden etc).

Coordinated and organized a series of international and National conferences and is the president of advanced FEBS advanced lecture courses entitled "Matrix Pathobiology, Signaling and Molecular Targets", organized since 2007 in Greece.

He is an active member of international scientific societies (American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, International Society for Matrix Biology, FEBS, Registered European Toxicologist / ERT of EUROTOX, etc) and has > 80 invited lectures at national and international conferences, as well as universities and research Institutes in Greece and abroad.

He has published more than 245 articles in international scientific journals with circulation in refereed (peer-review journals), 35 book chapters and > 300 abstracts in conference proceedings. His published work received awards at national and international conferences, broad recognition (top most-cited authors in FEBS J 2013, 2014 & Distinguished articles on Global Medical Discovery 2014, etc)
