Doctoral studies aim to create high-quality and up-to-date scientific research, as well as to train scientists capable of contributing to the advancement and development of science and basic research. Doctoral studies cover all research activities of the Department of Chemistry. Graduates of doctoral programs are intended to staff the research, business and educational potential of the country and abroad. At the same time, the doctoral program is a source of academic prestige and international academic excellence for the Department, as well as for the University in general, and contributes to the qualitative and quantitative enhancement of research output.

The minimum qualifications of candidate PhD students are:
a) University Degree from a Greek University, or an equivalent foreign institution,
b) Postgraduate Diploma (MSc) from a Greek University, or an equivalent foreign institution as recognized by the DOATAP, or having a single postgraduate degree, in accordance with Article 46 of Law 4485/2017.

In special cases (e.g., high-quality scientific publication), and after a reasoned decision of the Department's Assembly, candidates who do not hold an MSc degree can be accepted as PhD candidates.

Α three-member committee is assigned for every PhD candidate. The minimum time required for the doctorate Diploma is three years, for candidates holding an MSc degree. During the first year of the doctorate studies, the PhD candidate must attend asked four courses (two courses each semester) and pass the related exams. These courses are proposed by the three-member advisory committee, and may be the same as those of the previous MSc program of the PhD candidate. The list of courses for the doctorate studies includes all courses of the all Post-Graduate Programs supported by the Department of Chemistry, as well as additional courses proposed by the faculty.

The time period for obtaining the Doctoral Degree may not be less than three (3) full calendar years from the date of the appointment of the three-member Advisory Committee. In special cases (PhD candidates not holding a MSc degree), the minimum period is four (4) years.
