The Department of Animal Production, Fisheries & Aquaculture was founded recently by the integration to the University of Patras of the Department of Technology of Fisheries-Aquaculture of the Technological Educational Institute of Western Greece, which since 1981 has been associated with the development and support of the sector in Greece.

The Department provides education and research in the fields of animal production and exploitation of fish resources and aquaculture supporting a strategic pillar of the primary production sector of the Greek economy. It is in Messolonghi and has several laboratories with considerable facilities and scientific equipment.

Comparative advantages of the Department are due to the the proximity to the largest fish farming area in Greece (Echinades islands), to the Mesolongi-Aetolikos Lagoons considered as one important natural laboratory of the Mediterranean, to one of the largest riverine wetlands in Greece (Acheloos River riverside lakes) as well as to an area of significant activity and tradition in the primary sector. All these give the Department a special character and offer to students a lot of opportunities for practice and prospects.
