Doctoral studies in Food Science and Technology aim at performing modern and high-quality scientific research, as well as training scientists capable of contributing to the advancement and development of science and basic research. Graduates of the doctoral program are intended to serve the research, business, and academic potential of Greece and abroad. At the same time, the doctoral program is a source of academic excellence and international academic recognition for the Department, as well as for the University in general, and contributes to the qualitative and quantitative enhancement of the research output.

The minimum qualifications of doctoral students are:

  1. University Diploma or Degree (University or TEI) from a Greek Institution or from a recognized as an equivalent institution of a foreign country in topics related to Food Science and Technology, Chemistry, Biology, Natural and Life Sciences.
  2. Postgraduate Degree (MSc) awarded by National or International Accredited Foreign Institutions, or Integrated Master in accordance with article 46 of Law 4485/2017 (sections a).

In exceptional cases (for example the existence of high quality and state-of-the-art scientific publication or patent), and upon recommendation of the Coordination Committee (CC) and decision by the Department's Assembly, a PhD candidate without Postgraduate Degree may be accepted. The exemption for acceptance without Postgraduate Degree does not apply for graduates of TEI, ASPAITE or equivalent schools.

For PhD candidates who do not hold an MSc, the minimum duration for supporting their PhD thesis is set to 4 years. Also, the Department Assembly may set the candidates the requirement to complete a number of postgraduate courses. The attendance time of these compulsory courses counts towards the minimum time required to obtain the Doctorate.

In all other cases, the minimum duration for obtaining their Doctoral Degree may not be less than three (3) full calendar years from the date of appointment of the three-member Advisory Committee.
