The remarkable combination of mechanical and functional properties of 0D, 1D, and 2D nanocarbons make them ideal candidates for use in composite materials. More than a dozen years from the Nobel-awarded experiments on graphene (Geim & Novoselov, 2010), it is now well-established that these intrinsic qualities can only be manifested at the macroscopic scale only by careful and continuous improvement of nanocarbon synthesis, functionalization, and processing techniques, for the creation of useful, optimized structures. At the same tile, assessment of the mechanics of the constituent materials and their composites at different length scales, from the nano- to the macro-scale, is of paramount importance for optimizing their performance. Th e talk presents the progress achieved by the scientific team in these directions, on the basis of three major research areas currently studied at the Nanotechnology and Advanced Materials Laboratory of the Dept. of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras, namely: carbon nanomembranes for water separation, graphene/CNT hybrid paper films with ultra-rapid resistive heating performance and structural superlubricity by additively-manufactured components.

Σύντομο Βιογραφικό Ομιλητή

Konstantinos Dasios graduated, in 1996, from the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Patras, Greece, which he entered with an honorary State Scholarship for achieving 2nd best grade entry place. In 1998 he got his Master of Science from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), Pittsburgh, United States. He carried out his doctoral studies at the Institute of Advanced Materials of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Petten, The Netherlands and got his PhD on the Fracture Mechanics of Ceramic Matrix Composites in 2003. He served as Associate Professor in the Postgraduate Degree Program of Quality Assurance of the Hellenic Open University, Greece, for 6 years, postdoctoral researcher and then Lecturer under contract in the Department of Materials Science of the University of Patras, Greece for 7 years, and Associate Professor at the Technological Educational Institute of Patras, Greece for 8 years, teaching a multitude of courses. From 2010 until 2019 he served as Lecturer and then Assistant Professor (tenure 2018), at the department of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Ioannina, Greece. In 2017 he was visiting professor in the II University of Naples, Italy. Since 2020, he is Assistant Professor at the department of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras, Greece. He has supervised and co-supervised 8 PhD theses and 25 Master theses. His research interests focus on the processing and experimental characterization of the mechanical, transport and smart properties of 1D and 2D nanocarbon-modified composites, nanomembranes, efficiency of dispersion of nanocarbons in aqueous media, synthesis of graphene and aligned CNT arrays and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) of materials mainly through Infrared Thermography and Raman Spectroscopy. He has participated in 15 US, European and national research projects and has lead, three highly competitive high risk/high gain European Commission Future and Emerging Technologies Horizon 2020 projects of a total budget of € 7.4M. He has published 65 papers in international scientific journals including 5 monographs and 39 papers in scientific conferences. He has given keynote and invited lectures at international scientific conferences. He has participated in the organization of 8 international conferences. He peer reviews for many high-impact scientific journals such as Nature Scientific Reports, Carbon, Polymer Reviews and Nanotechnology. He is a reviewer of research proposals for national bodies such as the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) and the Hellenic Foundation for Technology & Innovation (ELIDEK).
