This ranking includes around 12,000 universities worldwide and it is obtained after examining 31,000 universities from 200 countries on the basis of their online presence and the impact of their research work. Among them, there are a total of 66 Greek universities, public education institutions, as well as colleges and private training institutions. The position of the University of Patras appears stable in relation to last year’s levels, ranking 569th globally and 4th nationally this year. A remarkable performance of our institution is the 3rd place nationally and 382nd worldwide in the Openness criterion. The distinction of 3rd place in Greece in the total number of citations to our published work in Google Scholar with 1,306,118 citations is also significant. Based on the results of Webometrics, the following universities are ranked in the top ten in Greece:

CWTS Leiden Ranking is a system curated by the Research Centre for Science and Technology at Leiden University in collaboration with the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative, Sesame Open Science and OurResearch. In this annual report there are two versions, the ‘classic’ version with data from the Web of Science and the ‘open’ version with data from OpenAlex, a new bibliographic database that leverages 9.3 million publications. Both versions use bibliometric data from 2018-2021 for this report. In the open edition, the University of Patras ranks 4th in Greece, 178th in Europe (out of 470 institutions) and 556th in the world (out of 1,411). In the criteria categories, our positions among the nine Greek institutions were:
– Scientific Impact: 4
– Collaboration: 3
– Open Access: 3
In the classic version, the University of Patras is also ranked 4th in Greece, 224th in Europe and 701st in the world. In the criteria categories, our positions were:
– Scientific Impact: 4
– Collaboration: 4
– Open Access: 4
– Gender: 3
As the classic version contains historical data, it is observed that the University of Patras has stabilized its position, since in 2022 it was 4th in Greece, 228th in Europe and 705th in the world. The stable ranking of the University of Patras becomes more significant when one notices the increase in the number of institutions participating in the ranking list (about 100 new institutions were added). The Rector’s Office, faithful to the power of continuing efforts of previous Rector’s Authorities, makes good use of them, enhances them and congratulates the researchers and all the staff of the University of Patras who contributed with their work to this important distinction of the University of Patras.
